Cognitive dissonance  refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or behaviors. This produces a feeling of discomfort leading to an alteration in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviors to reduce the discomfort and restore balance etc. Trying to make sense of anything while "Allentown" is mercilessly on repeat in your head is virtually impossible, so obviously that means I have to listen to it and a bunch of other 80's jams while I write.

apophenia:  n.  the tendency to perceive a connection or meaningful pattern between unrelated or random things (such as objects or ideas).

They're the common thread right now, spilling out of every corner; it's a little weird the things that pop into your field of vision once you have established that there is a pattern to find.
